Where Did These Golf Gadets Come From?

I’m a bit of a history buff. At one point my interest in history was directed at people and I’ll freely admit that I’m still wonderfully obsessed with people now. But I’m also incredibly curious about all sorts of other things and their history.

For example. Let’s take the lowly divot tool. I can’t find any real history to it. Sure it makes sense that for golf etiquette purposes, you fix fairway divots and indentations you might make on the putting green but who had the idea first? What did the first divot tool look like? I’m guessing that the first divot tool was either a knife or a fork. Over time, both were guilty of flaws that made them rather ineffective. Today’s divot tools have two prongs. I find that they are often made of nickel or brass although plastic divot tools are common and I’ve even seen them with wood handles. Sometimes they do more than just fix divots. Some divot tools have brushes to clean your clubs and some divot tools have ball markers built in. My favorites divot tools are the Scottish golfer’s knife that is a multi function tool that happens to have a divot repair tool built in and the Green Buddy switchblade divot repair tool.

In this shopping season, divot tools make great stocking stuffers. Pair them with a pair of golf towels and a golfer’s caddy for their golf bag and they’ll really get a kick out of their Christmas stocking. Better yet if you celebrate Chanukah give them different golf gifts each day of the holiday.
