Golf Rules

Golf, like any well established game, has its own set of rules and regulations. In golf, these rules have been internationally set and are jointly governed by R&A - the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St.Andrews, and the USGA - United States Golf Association. USGA jurisdiction on the enforcement and interpretation of golf rules is limited to the countries of United States and Mexico. Canada, the remaining North American country, has the separate RCGA Royal Canadian Golf Association, although they tend to follow the lead of the two larger bodies USGA and R&A. The rules of golf continue to evolve, and are revised updated every other year.

Golf rules cover the number and specifications of the clubs and other equipment used in USGA or R&A play. With a wide array of equipment manufacturers available, you have many options for clubs and equipment at with different features and price points.

Fair Play is the fundamental theory underlying the game of golf. You will read excerpts that include “play the ball as it lies” or “play the course as you find it”. A few specific rules include:

• Every player must play the ball from position where it has come to rest after the stroke, unless a rule allows or demands a different action.

• The player furthest out plays first. This pertains to play in the fairway as well as on the green.

• While there are carefully defined exceptions, the condition of the course cannot be altered to gain an advantage.

• A Golf ball may only be replaced by another during play of a hole if it is destroyed (rule 5-3), lost (rule 27-1), or unplayable (rule 28), or at some other time permitted by the rules.
